The Mission
A couple years ago we were trying to figure out how file sharing could be done legally. With all the lawsuits flying around it became obvious that the on-line sites were risky at best. Then we said, let's use the same model of creating a community of swappers, however, swap actual CDs, DVDs and games that were no longer wanted. Then we would use our old friend, the United States Postal Service, as the delivery system. Viola - the idea of Swaprocks! was born - analog, peer-to-peer media swapping.
Over the next few months, Swaprocks! turned from a work-day time filler to a full on obsession. We kept theorizing on how to make the concept better and what kind of features it should have. First off, we decided to level the playing field by giving all items listed the value of one. Since it was something someone didn't want, their main concern was to get rid of it and get something new to them. If it had any greater worth it should be taken to an auction site or donated to a museum.
We also determined that the site would work better for all involved to have the swapping be between the individual and the community, because chances were slim that two individuals would want what each other had. As well, we kept the items to swap to CDs, DVDs and games so the shipping prices would be low and fair for everyone. And most importantly, we decided to keep the service free, which none of our members have complained about yet.
After all of our time talking the talk, we decided to walk the walk and start building the site and finally went live February 13th, 2005. Along the way, Swaprocks! has partnered with Amazon.com, which allows us to provide a smooth listing process as well as an avenue to fulfill your various shopping needs.
Since going live we've been making numerous repairs and additions in our little stride to be the best swapping site on the web. Psst, pass it on!
The Team
Frank "Hannibal" Bridges - the Design Dude
Frank's been performing graphical feats for about 20 years now. Along with his pension for design, Frank is possessed with the entrepreneurial spirit, as well as a flow of ideas like a Super Soaker on full bore. And of course, he loves it when a plan comes together.
Nick "Face" Medvedich - the Marketing Dude
Nick's no stranger to entrepreneurialism either. We call him the Triple Threat because he has sales experience, a marketing degree and a winning smile. Nick's got style for miles, and we're happy to have him as our Point Man on the wild and wooly Marketing Front.
Brian "Murdock" Dogawe - the Programming Dude
Brian's had an 'ode for the code since the days of tickling the keys of his Commodore 64 to tweak his Choose Your Own Adventure games. When he's not cranking out late-nite Java and Pearl for Swaprocks!, he's keeping corporate America running smoothly in the daylight hours.
Mr. T - the Dude with 'Tude
There's no substitute for Mr. T, however, we're still excepting applications - Fool!
